What's Happening

Autumn 2011

August – October

Sowing in the glasshouse at Willow Farm has now finished and the unit will be thoroughly cleaned and maintained ready for November when sowing starts again.

Planting of salads will finish towards the end of August. Harvesting will continue until Mid-late October in the fens and November on the East Coast.

The major harvest period begins with combining and onion harvesting in August, and potato harvest commencing in September. These operations are very weather dependant so can take a long time if there is much rainfall.

Following harvests, some land will be prepared and either drilled with winter wheat or a winter cover crop such as mustard.

Some of the harvested cereal fields will be left in stubble over the winter. The spilt grain from harvest and weeds that will grow will provide a valuable seed source for birds through the winter months.
